Purpose

The LT. Michael P. Quinn Scholarship Fund was established on September 8, 1969 to honor the memory of Lt. Michael P Quinn, USMC, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines 1 Marine DIvision of Charlestown, who was Killed In Action on August 29, 1969, 28 miles south of DaNang, Republic of Viet Nam. The purpose of this community-based fund is to commemorate Lt. Quinn's life and to aid the worthy youths of his community during their years of college or technical school.

Criteria

The criteria for selection are drawn from those personal and intellectual traits which were embodied by the man. These include (a) promise of academic success as shown in high scholastic attainment and an active, inquiring mind, (b) substantial athletic achievement in at lease one sport, (c) responsible citizenship, demonstrated through participation in service-oriented activities in school, church, or community. In addition, the candidate must be a graduating senior or high school graduate, must establish substantial financial need, and must have lived in Charlestown for at least four years at the time he/she applies for consideration.

Amount

2024

Current funds permit the annual award of one $16,000.00 scholarship for the first year beyond high school. If substantial financial need continues, the Michael P Quinn Scholar may apply for an additional grant for his/her second year. If funds permit and the additional need is demonstrated, he/she may be awarded additional assistance to a maximum of $8,000.00 known as the Francis J. McCluskey Supplementary Award. Presently available funds do not permit financial aid beyond the second year.

Use

There are no formal restrictions on the use of the scholarship award. The student may use the award at the school or college of his/her choice, and may apply the funds to whatever portion of his/her expenses as he/she judges most appropriate, at a time he/she chooses to do so. The Trustees expect only that he/she will bear in mind the purpose of the Fund and try to develop himself/herself further along the lines as demonstrated by Lt. Quinn's example.
